Introduction

The Most Beloved Walt Disney Animation Studios Film in Japanese History is Finally Adapted for Theatre!

It is the story of two sisters who let themselves go with true love

Disney’s newest musical FROZEN opened in June 2021 at the JR EAST Shiki Theatre HARU. The show was created based on the animated feature film released in 2013, and premiered in March 2018 on Broadway. The news of the stage-adaptation of this popular title, which held the all-time global record of the No.1 box office champion for animated feature films at the time, created a global stir as soon as it opened.

For the musical, the playwright Jennifer Lee, who was also in charge of the direction of the animation film, depicted characterizations, emotional expressions, and the relationships between each character in a more careful manner, and further deepened it into a profound drama, while keeping in mind the story line of the animated feature film. The music and lyrics were written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, the couple that won the Academy Award for “Let It Go”. More than ten new songs have been added in addition to the original songs including “For the First Time in Forever” and “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?”

What is the true love that will save the frozen world? – the story handwoven by the two tight-knit sisters will deliver love and emotions to the Japanese people once again. Shiki Theatre Company and Disney celebrated the 25th anniversary of their partnership in 2020. Please look forward to the much-awaited spectacular musical FROZEN!

Story

What is the true love that will thaw a frozen heart…?
Now begins the adventure of a sister with unwanted magical powers, and her adoring younger sister.

The young princesses of Arendelle, Elsa and Anna, are very close sisters. One night, the older sister Elsa, who possesses a magical power to manipulate ice, accidentally hits her younger sister Anna in the head with her magical power. When the Queen calls for the “Hidden Folk of the Mountains” in order to save Anna who had become as cold as ice, their leader Pabbie removes from Anna the spell that was cast on her. Elsa pleads Pabbie to erase her magical power also, but is told the power is a part of her and cannot be erased. The King and Queen decides to close the castle gates and hide her magical power from everyone until she is able to control the power. From that day on Elsa locks herself away in her room, and gets herself cornered by the loneliness and her magical power which grew stronger every year. Meanwhile, Anna becomes more and more lonesome for her older sister who refuses to show up no matter how much she calls for her. And then one day, the King and Queen pass away.

Eventually came the day of the Coronation. The castle gates which were long closed are open. In the castle bubbling over with celebration, Anna meets Prince Hans of the Southern Isles, and Kristoff the mountain man. On the other hand, Elsa manages to make it through the Coronation ceremony safe and sound, and becomes Queen of Arendelle. During the party celebrating the Coronation, the two of them enjoy a sisterly conversation for the first time in a while. In the middle of that, Anna and Hans build quite a rapport with each other, and exchange vows of marriage. Anna asks Elsa for permission for her marriage, but is unable to gain her understanding, and the two are caught in a quarrel – and unable to suppress her emotions, Elsa releases her ice magic throughout the castle ballroom. Leaving behind the people calling her a monster in a frenzy, Elsa runs out away from the castle.

Anna and Kristoff, who decide to cooperate with each other to pursue Elsa, encounter Olaf who was the snowman that Elsa and Anna had created built a long time ago when they were young. While on their way to the deep mountains guided by Olaf, Anna witnesses the town covered in snow, and realizes the unfathomed powers of her sister, but continues on her way believing that things can be restored once she talks to Elsa. Meanwhile, having resolved to live freely just on her own, Elsa releases all of her magical powers that she had suppressed for years, which then creates a beautiful palace of ice.

The party arrives at the Ice Palace. Anna persuades Elsa to return to Arendelle and thaw the snow, but having learned of the town covered in snow, Elsa falls into despair and loses control of her emotions once again. Elsa’s power is released in all directions, and hits Anna directly in the heart. Elsa asks Kristoff to protect Anna, then blows everyone out of her palace using her magic in order to keep them away from herself with uncontrollable powers.

Having saved and raised by the “Hidden Folk of the Mountains” as family when he was young, Kristoff turns to them for help. However, because it was the heart that the magic hit her, Pabbi is not able to help. Learning that it is “true love” alone which can save her, Kristoff resolves to escort Anna back to Prince Hans. In the meantime, Hans is concerned for Anna’s safety, and rounds up people to head to the mountains, and arrives at Elsa’s palace.

Will Anna be saved by true love? And what destiny awaits Elsa…?
